Purpose The purpose is to provide a comprehensive review of general surgery from the variety of forms of shock to the objective evaluation of esophageal function. This book has provided an important foundation for surgical trainees in the past and will continue to do so in the future. This edition includes access to an electronic version, improving accessibility. Audience It is clear that the intended audience spans advanced medical students who have chosen surgery as a career to junior staff. It is written by authorities in their respective fields, adding an important degree of credibility. Features This comprehensive textbook of general surgery is inclusive in that it starts with goal of being a lifelong learner and ends with a well-organized discussion of the clinical practice of surgery based on organ systems. It combines discussions of anatomy and physiology with surgical practice and basic operative tenets. It is this broad focus that is the strength of the book. Assessment Simply put, this is an excellent book. While I am somewhat of a bibliophile, I think that all surgical residents should have a book of this genre to use during their residency. It provides the cornerstone of surgical education. It breadth and inclusiveness keeps it relevant throughout training and into the early years of practice. The new edition is written by authorities in the field and provides an all-important electronic version.
