Description
The book discusses how to apply cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to children and adolescents diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorders. It explores the various phases of treatment and how to collaborate with other disciplines, such as psychiatry. The book is very practical, containing handouts and worksheets. This volume is part of the Treatment Plans and Interventions for Evidence-Based Psychotherapy series.
Purpose
This book aims to provide the tools necessary for dynamic, personalized CBT for children and adolescents rather than a standardized approach. These are very worthy objectives, and the book meets the stated objectives.
Audience
The book is useful for all clinicians, and it meets the needs of its intended audience. The authors are credible authorities in the subject matter. Brian C. Chu is a professor of Psychology at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. He is the past editor of Cognitive and Behavioral Practice and has won awards for his work. His research focuses on therapy processes and mechanisms of change. Sandra S. Pimentel is Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She serves on the editorial board of Evidence-Based Practice in Child and Adolescent Mental Health and is interested in CBT for adolescents and young adults.
Features
The book begins with a description of CBT and the early treatment phase. The cognitive model explores cognitions, physiological reactions, and behaviors. Both the child's and parents' goals are used to devise a case conceptualization. An important first step is establishing a positive working relationship. Specific techniques include psychoeducation, cognitive interventions, behavioral interventions, and teaching parenting skills. The later treatment phase focuses on termination and relapse prevention. Some children may need a psychiatry consultation. Clinicians are always concerned about suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury behaviors. The book addresses various DSM-5 anxiety disorders. It also discusses school refusal and attendance problems. The book is very readable and contains numerous tables/figures, which help clarify the text. It also provides 49 reproducible handouts and worksheets in Appendix A, which can be downloaded and printed. The other appendix contains resources for therapists and families.
Assessment
This workbook is excellent because it contains so much practical information for clinicians to use when addressing anxiety and depression in children and adolescents. The handouts and worksheets are wonderful tools to use with clients. Readers will not be disappointed with this publication.
