Description
This book serves the clinical community providing care to those with addictive diseases by taking a comprehensive look at CBT theory and the applications for CBT. This book, however, is more than just a look into CBT; it is a full exploration of how it works, who it serves, stigma, and the difficulties in the field of addiction for clinicians who strive to make a difference with a misunderstood diagnosis.
Purpose
The purpose of this book is to present how clinicians can utilize cognitive behavioral therapy to improve the lives of those challenged by addiction. The book lays the foundation of helping practitioners understand CBT and its processes and offers casework to model how to use CBT effectively. The authors explore both substance abuse addictions and process addictions. This is helpful for therapists as these addictions are often intertwined but can be assuaged through CBT engagement.
Audience
This book will benefit anyone seeking to provide effective treatment for addictions. Students in psychiatric rotations and programs can learn what it means to be a true practitioner. This is a guide for clinicians who strive for impact and change, not only for their clients, but for themselves. Even seasoned professionals will find this book to be refreshing and skill-enhancing.
Features
This is an easy read of complex material. It flows as smoothly as reading a novel. I particularly like that the book goes deep enough to explore the misconceptions of cognitive behavioral therapy. Many of the chapters provide views of cases through graphics, which help conceptualize CBT treatment and outcome goals. The book makes clinicians more aware of how they are perceived by patients and how difficult it can be to effectively treat addictions and clients entrenched in them. This book teaches clinicians how to maintain credibility with clients who believe in their addiction more than they believe in their treatment provider. One of my favorite sections of the book is on page 75. It is also notable that the book does not leave out harm reduction and relapse prevention. The preface and book overview set the tone for what will be learned so should not be skipped.
Assessment
This is a useful tool for treatment professionals. Case reports and interventions will help clinicians make a real difference in the lives of their patients. This book is necessary for anyone who wants to utilize CBT effectively.
