Description
This book covers PTSD in military personnel in great detail. The second edition reflects the changes in the DSM-5 and addresses emerging trends.
Purpose
The purpose is to shed light on PTSD in military personnel. The book covers the newest and emerging trends and addresses specific challenges, applications, and limitations of each therapeutic approach. These are worthy objectives, as PTSD is an important topic and the stigma of seeking treatment has been lessening.
Audience
Even though this is a clinical handbook, those studying to work with those suffering from PTSD and those who may serve on critical incident stress management/peer teams would also find this to be a great resource. The book updates readers on the emerging treatment trends and helps them understand treatment more clearly.
Features
The handbook starts off by describing the important hierarchical culture that exists in the military. It then goes into the different treatment approaches and specific clinical issues associated with PTSD. I appreciated the chapter format, which describes each treatment style and ends with a clinical case vignette. Some of the chapters explore conceptual approaches that are being used to treat PTSD, such as mindfulness-based techniques, couples and family interventions, and complementary and alternative therapies. Other chapters cover chronic pain and moral injury, while the final chapter discusses identifying post-traumatic growth.
Assessment
Although I am not a clinician, I have a background in promoting mental wellness in first responders, many of whom also have military backgrounds. This book is a great resource that provides valuable insights into therapies that can be offered to those combatting PTSD. This is a very worthwhile book.
