Description
This is the fifth edition (4th edition published in 2007) of a now standard book in neonatal procedures. The book covers almost every conceivable procedure performed in the neonatal intensive care unit, and the companion CD has been replaced with a website with excellent videos of several procedures.
Purpose
The purpose is to offer guidance for procedures performed on fragile neonates, usually in the neonatal intensive care unit. Many of these procedures are infrequently performed and the skill level of the providers may benefit from this reference. The use of simulators is emphasized as well as the paramount goal of patient safety. The book certainly meets the editor's objectives.
Audience
The audience is neonatal healthcare providers, from nurse practitioners and residents to staff physicians and nurses, and the book is written at an appropriate level for all of these potential users.
Features
Divided into sections on physiological monitoring, blood and miscellaneous sampling, vascular access, tube replacement, and other miscellaneous procedures, the book covers virtually all procedures performed on neonates. An excellent introductory section covers consent, restraint, analgesia, and sedation, among other topics. New chapters in this edition review bubble CPAP (with an accompanying video on the website), therapeutic hypothermia, and the use of simulation-based procedural training. Excellent photographs and diagrams help readers understand various anatomic relationships and procedural directions. Each edition of this book has continued to improve the didactic content and illustrations.
Assessment
This is the standard reference in the field of neonatology for the performance of procedures and their complications. It is a must have for any neonatal unit, especially units in which training of residents, fellows, or practitioners is ongoing.
