Description
This is the seventh edition of the standard manual for staging of malignant tumors according to the TNM classification system, which is prepared in affiliation with the International Union Against Cancer (UICC).
Purpose
The goal was to update the TNM classification of malignant tumors and to include the new categories recommended by experts. Such updates are required every few years and the book will be welcomed by oncologists who have used the previous edition.
Audience
It is intended for oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, and tumor registrars and it will be used by their trainees and assistants. The authors are well-known authorities in the field and have worked on most if not all previous editions of this manual.
Features
This pocket-sized book is divided into several major segments, each covering an anatomic region or an organ system. Tumors of all organ systems are comprehensively covered and the data are presented in a standardized format enabling users to quickly review the material and use the facts in practice. For example, most chapters include rules of classification of tumors of each organ (some list anatomic subsites) and brief descriptions of all stages to illustrate the salient features that might require attention. Much information is presented in a tabular format, and a brief summary ends each chapter. There are no illustrations or references.
Assessment
This is an update of the standard manual that has proven its value over the many years since it was first published under the auspices of the IUCC. The book appears in the same compact format as its predecessors. The authors have updated the approach to several tumor stagings to reflect the current state of the science. Accordingly, the book contains quite a few revisions and modifications to reflect the changes in the practice of clinical oncology. These changes make the previous edition of the manual obsolete, and the seventh edition will be welcomed by all who have used the previous editions.
