Description
This guide to over 200 nursing skills has been revised to incorporate evidence-based practice updates in procedures.
Purpose
As a resource for nurses who perform common procedures, the book has procedure manual type steps for each skill to improve competence and comfort levels in performing them. Nursing practice is constantly changing and evolving and it is important to have up-to-date procedures.
Audience
The audience includes student nurses, registered nurses, licensed practical/vocational nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, certified aides, medical assistants, and any other healthcare workers charged with performing common procedures. Dr. Altman is a faculty member of the University of Washington School of Nursing. She has been an educator for over 25 years and received the university's Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2002.
Features
The 200+ skills are presented in a step-by-step fashion using the nursing process. In addition, each skill includes information about variations for geriatric and pediatric patients, as well as adaptations where indicated for home care and long term care settings. The book is laid out well with plenty of photos, but these are small and sometimes fuzzy or difficult to see.
Assessment
This is a good book for nurses who are just starting out. It appears to be comprehensive in its coverage of procedures that are commonly performed. Pictures and illustrations need to be of better quality.
