Description
This book presents a thorough summary of pertinent information on fluids and electrolytes. Much is presented in tables with clear and concise narrative.
Purpose
The book "is designed to be used in the clinical setting, both in conjunction with the parent text and as a stand-alone product. All the important information readers need is right at their fingertips." The parent text is Fluids and Electrolytes with Clinical Applications: A Programmed Approach, 7th edition by Kee et al. (Thomson Delmar Learning, 2004). I agree that this is an excellent reference.
Audience
"With a clear comprehensive approach, this quick reference pocket guide of basic principles of fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances, imbalances, and related disorders is a must-have for all who work in the field." Students and their faculty will find this book helpful. This reference should be on all units where patient care is provided.
Features
This book is packed full of useful resource information. Examples across the life span are presented and the book uses over 200 diagrams and tables. Electrolyte imbalances, acid-base imbalances, intravenous therapy, clinical situations, and other lab values are covered. There are several appendixes, one of which lists foods rich in specific elements. This second edition has added information about clients with burns, increased intracranial pressure, and cancer.
Assessment
I love this book. I finally understand ABGs and am able to remember due to the clear and concise way it is presented. I will use material from this book for most of the classes I teach and plan to put a copy on the units where students have clinicals.
