The previous edition was published in 2020. Purpose The purpose of this book to train "phlebotomy students to practice correctly and safely". Additional objectives include helping students pass the course and the national certification exam. These are very worthy objectives well met (yet again) by this edition. Audience The book's primary audience is phlebotomy students. It meets the needs of this audience. It would also be useful for practicing phlebotomists wanting an up-to-date refresher or of interest to anyone in a clinical laboratory to understand the complexity of the various phlebotomy procedures and how to perform them well. Finally, it would be of interest to anyone in healthcare either performing or interested in phlebotomy - either to improve their own phlebotomy skills or understand the criticality of correct specimen collection in producing reliable laboratory results. Features The most obvious change with this edition is the significant formatting and organization. The material follows a logical progression starting at a high level in understanding healthcare operations, moving to the human body (anatomy and function), then phlebotomy, and finishing with special procedures. Each chapter follows a standard layout, framed at the beginning by the relevant NAACLS entry-level phlebotomy competencies and ending with a study and review exam and pertinent case studies. The text is clear and concise, the figures superb, and the use of color in the key learning points for emphasis excellent. And of course, the information is truly comprehensive. The accompanying Student Workbook reinforces learning in fun ways (e.g. crossword puzzles) and the book is enhanced by videos accessible online. The book's only shortcoming is that while the bleeding time was finally gone in this edition (no mention in the text and no listing in the index), a "bleeding time determination procedure" video is still posted online. It is time to remove this and match the 2016 ASCP Choosing Wisely recommendation to stop using this test for patient care. Assessment Yet another fabulous edition of this comprehensive book on phlebotomy. For anyone studying to be a phlebotomist or wanting a refresher, this is a "must have".
