Description
A complete resource for the Nurse Practitioner Essentials of Practice, this book outlines all aspects of what it means to be a practicing Nurse Practitioner at the Doctoral level. The competency of Domains, broken down include Theory and Research based knowledge. This is the hallmark of the doctoral level. The book expands on clinical judgement, as well as person-centered care with all the specifics clearly defined. DNP prepared Nurse Practitioners have learned all of the concepts in this text and can refer to each in this book as they participate in the highest level of the profession in their careers. A template for the DNP Project is a much-needed part of this book for the student in pursuit of their DNP degree. |
Purpose
Nurse Practitioners pursuing the doctoral level (DNP degree) must fulfill specific competencies which are based on the 10 American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials. All doctoral nursing programs must follow these Essentials, passing on this information to their students. It is this standardization of knowledge that ensures all students reach the same advanced level. Upon graduation, DNP graduates are expected to have developed the foundation to sustain the highest level of practice: clinical, administrative and academic. These expectations are called Competencies. This text leaves no aspect of overall patient care unaddressed to the readers so individual patients, socioeconomic groups, and whole populations can benefit from the highest quality of care from the DNP prepared nurse. |
Audience
Directed specifically to nurses and advanced practice nurses, this book delves into all aspects of the DNP Core Competencies for advanced practice nurses. Nurses that already have their DNP degree and those pursuing one will find all they need in this book. There are specific topics in each DNP program curriculum that the student must master. This is expressed in the DNP Project - the culmination of learning, research, and dissemination of the work. For all DNP students and anyone considering pursuing this terminal degree, this text outlines the core competencies of the DNP Project from conception to dissemination which will help DNP students to understand the reasons for each step. |
Features
This book describes The AACN Essential in detail. In the first part, each chapter discusses the curriculum content necessary to fulfill the Essentials for a DNP Program. Students are taught leadership, population health, systems thinking, and professionalism on a doctoral level. The specific Essential Domains are described in detail, helping readers understand the reasons for each and why they differ from their current knowledge. The second part is a template for the DNP Project from problem recognition, goals and objectives, theoretical underpinnings, implementation, and dissemination of the work. |
Assessment
For DNP students, this book is a powerful addition for facilitating understanding of what they will be doing in their DNP program and beyond. For DNP prepared Nurse Practitioners, this book will help facilitate understanding of the role and opportunities for which they have been prepared. The DNP project takes the DNP student to a level within the healthcare system beyond most of their colleagues in their knowledge of how the patient interaction works best. Also, this book helps readers see the scope of opportunities that lie within most health systems. It is the act of improving our current health system where Nurse Practitioners on a doctoral level are best prepared. The United States has the most expensive health care system in the western world, yet it ranks at the bottom of population health outcomes among developed nations. The time has come for a paradigm shift in our healthcare delivery system. DNP doctoral prepared Nurse Practitioners are "change agents" and that is the future of our current healthcare system. |
