Description
This second edition provides comprehensive information that is critical for anyone providing education and care for lactating parents and their infants. The book begins with a detailed background on the science of lactation and newborn feeding, including scientific evidence, physiology of the newborn, biochemistry and physiology of lactation, normal newborn behavior, and facilitating lactation initiation. A management section addresses both normal lactation as well as special circumstances, including breastfeeding and employment, multiples, preterm infants, and maternal and newborn health issues. The final section covers interdisciplinary teams, cultural sensitivity, and other professional issues. An online ebook is included to provide access to interactive learning, mobile access, and notetaking capabilities.
Purpose
The purpose of this book is to offer a core curriculum for any healthcare professional who provides care for lactating parents and their infants. The book covers each topic thoroughly with evidence-based information.
Audience
Although the primary audience is lactation care specialists, all professionals need the information in this comprehensive book as they provide lactation care and support. The authors note that lactation care is, by nature, interprofessional. The book meets the needs of the target audience well by providing a well-organized and comprehensive review of the knowledge base needed for lactation care. The editors and contributors are all experienced lactation professionals from a wide variety of institutions and geographic areas. Their cumulative expertise makes them ideal authors for the book's content.
Features
Section 1 provides a thorough summary of background scientific information needed as a foundation for providing evidence-based lactation care. The nine chapters in this section address the scientific evidence supporting breastfeeding as well as normal newborn anatomy and physiology as it relates to breastfeeding and normal newborn behavior. They include human milk biochemistry and nutrition during lactation. Section 2 on lactation management provides detailed and concrete information for a wide variety of lactation situations, from normal initiation of breastfeeding to multiple complications affecting lactation. Section 3 covers professional issues, including standards for lactation care professionals, cultural sensitivity, and milk banking. The order of the chapters in each section is somewhat disorganized. Dividing section 2 into normal and abnormal would have made the book more organized and usable. The charts, images, and figures in many chapters are clear and useful. The figures in chapters 13 (Initiation of Breastfeeding) and 21 (Newborn Challenges) are particularly helpful. Each chapter ends with a key points section, which is helpful, but might be best placed at the beginning of the chapter.
Assessment
Other than the issue of the organization of the chapters, this is an excellent book. It definitely meets its objective of providing an evidence-based core curriculum for lactation care professionals. The updated edition is justified due to the changing evidence in the field. The emphasis on interprofessional care in the final section is particularly helpful given the growing interest in and appreciation of the value of interprofessional education and practice.
