This updated edition emphasizes patient-centered care and includes updated language to be more inclusive and less gender specific when referring to patients being prescribed contraception. The previous edition was published in 2018. Purpose The book's purpose is to describe the menstrual cycle, instances in which contraception is needed, and methods available for people at various stages of their lives. There is information about menstrual irregularity and ways contraception may be effective in helping with those abnormalities. All methods of contraception are described in detail. This book is and has been the go-to manual for prescribing contraception for many years. It goes above and beyond meeting objectives and expectations, as it provides the content needed to provide information accurately and fully, and keeps clients at the center of all of the discussions. Audience This book is written for any practitioners working with clients who need contraception. This can include active practitioners of all levels, as well as learners. It does not assume that everyone understands the physiology behind a situation but explains it in easy-to-understand terms. This book includes many authors, most of which are physicians with medical degrees and public health degrees. While one author is a nurse practitioner, there isn't a midwife, which might have added to the information presented. Features This is a comprehensive book on contraception. It tackles tough subjects, especially in light of the overturning of Roe v. Wade. It makes a case that practitioners must be more diligent than ever in helping clients choose the best contraceptive for them, as their other choices may be limited. It does this by helping practitioners understand the menstrual cycle and what variances can happen during it. The book discusses the efficacy of each method while limiting bias. It encourages practitioners to discuss the efficacy and best practices with their clients and allows them to make the best-informed choice. The book discusses different periods in clients' lives and the implementation of contraception at those times. It also notes various gynecological problems. Each section is written with a person-centered approach where each client is the expert and is the best person to decide what will work for them. Inclusive language is noted. For example, chapter 3 covers clients born with a uterus. In the postpartum chapter, it refers to cesarean birth instead of cesarean section. There are also tips given to help practitioners when something may be a little out of the ordinary. For example, the book encourages practitioners to include a note on scripts to pharmacists that confirms their intent to order a specific medication at the specified dosage, especially if it is high. This is helpful in the real world. Assessment This is the most useful comprehensive text on contraception and GYN care on the market. It is an absolute must for anyone who will be prescribing contraception or working with clients who are using a contraceptive method. It is in its 22nd edition for a reason. Without this book, many providers would be lost as they learn how to prescribe or manage nuances they have not encountered previously. As contraception changes, so must the resources to keep up to date on the latest medications, algorithms, indications, and contraindications of each method. As more research is done, more information is known, so the publication of this book is needed in a timely fashion. To date, I have not found a book containing this content that is as thorough, easily understood, and as comprehensive as this one.
