Description
This evidence-based book, widely used as a core textbook in nurse-midwifery, midwifery, and women's health education throughout the United States, provides a full compendium of the most up-to-date didactic knowledge and clinical skills necessary for the safe clinical practice of midwifery. |
Purpose
The purpose of this book is to continue to serve as the gold standard in the practice of midwifery in the US. |
Audience
The book's primary audience is comprised of pre-certification nurse-midwifery and midwifery students, instructors and professors, professional midwives, and women's health practitioners. The section editors on anatomy and physiology, primary care, intrapartum, newborn, and sexual, gynecologic, and reproductive health care are recognized authorities in these areas. The chapter authors originate from practices across the country and are experts in the subjects under discussion in each of the 39 chapters. |
Features
The book contains seven comprehensive sections: midwifery (including context and professional foundations); primary care; sexual, gynecologic, and reproductive health care; antepartum; intrapartum; postpartum; and newborn. New to this edition is the incorporation of the American College of Nurse-Midwives' Core Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice (2020). This edition provides new techniques for screening and diagnosing across the lifespan, chronic conditions in pregnancy, and updated information on health equity promotion. The seventh edition's section on sexual, gynecologic, and reproductive health care is more comprehensive and detailed than the previous edition's gynecology section, with chapters on sexuality, menstrual cycle abnormalities, fertility, breast and chest conditions, and gender-affirming care. |
Assessment
The book continues to evolve, with each new edition reflecting the growth in the midwifery knowledge base and associated clinical practices. |
