It is organized from simple to complex topics and presents step-by-step instructions on how to calculate medication dosages. It includes access to an ebook with interactive tools. Purpose The purpose is to make it easier for nursing students to learn how to calculate medication dosages and to administer medications to patients orally, parenterally, or topically. The objectives are worthy, and the method of teaching is easy for students to follow. This type of book is definitely needed, but I don't know if the second edition offers much more than the first. The print version is preferable to the online version because of the computations that are needed for mathematical calculations. The website helps meet the objectives, but the most valuable aspect of it is the practice that it offers. Audience This book is appropriate for students as well as for licensed nurses or anyone administering medications to patients. The authors target students, but this is a useful book to have on each floor of a hospital, clinic, or other patient facility where medications are given. Both authors are nursing professors and experts in their field. Features The book starts with basic math that the learner may not have had in many years, and it stresses the importance of accuracy in medication calculations and administration. The most valuable inclusion is the description of three methods for solving the calculations: dimensional analysis, ratio-proportion, and formula methods. It places them side by side so readers can either learn all three or select the one they are most comfortable with. The tables, labels of medications used in calculations, and other pictures are an excellent addition to the book. A unique chapter covers hydration and nutrition calculations, which are not always included in this type of book. Assessment Student and practicing nurses need this reference and should access it often. The updates in this edition include a case study, memory aids, graphics, and more practice activities with calculations. The math doesn't change, but the appearance of the second edition is an improvement over the first.
