Description
This overview of genetics for primary care clinicians covers basic genetics, diagnostic techniques, and the role of the genetics counselor. Specific genetic diseases are arranged by body system. The key term boxes located throughout provide a quick reference for commonly used genetic terms. This book is suitable for use in healthcare curriculums and as a desk reference for clinicians.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide a foundational book for use in genetics curriculums or as a resource for clinicians. The authors clearly meet their objectives by providing the information in a format that easily translates into practice. This book fills an important gap between the discipline of clinical genetics and the primary care clinicians tasked with caring for patients affected by genetically linked diseases.
Audience
The intended audience is students and educators in all health disciplines as well as clinicians who need clinically focused, foundational genetics information. The design is in keeping with the intended audience and the book could easily be used as a course textbook or practice desk reference. The authors have practice and academic expertise and have compiled a group of contributors with both clinical and genetics expertise to cover the breadth of this subject.
Features
The book provides a basic understanding of genetics and its importance in clinical practice. The presentation has a logical flow, beginning with basic concepts and then an overview of prenatal, development, and teratogenesis. The chapter layout is one of the best features of this book. Each chapter begins with objectives and a list of key terms that are easily identified throughout the book and further defined in the chapter. The key terms and their definitions are listed in columns on the outside edge of each page. This book takes advantage of well-organized tables, making key information easy to locate. Each chapter closes with a concise summary and review questions that focus on important takeaways. The glossary and index are well done, making it well suited for a reference book.
Assessment
This is an excellent foundational genetics book that is well designed to provide genetics knowledge and integrate it into clinical practice. It would be a great addition to any professional or allied health curriculum.
