Purpose
The purpose is to provide a guide for nursing students and practitioners who care for vulnerable populations. It addresses major concepts and theories, research, practice and programs, teaching and learning, and policy related to these populations.
Audience
The audience is nursing students (both undergraduate and graduate) and active practitioners (nursing and others) seeking guidance to care for vulnerable populations. The evidence-based information in each chapter within specific thematic areas focuses on application to practice, providing authentic, real-world examples and exemplars. The authors, Mary deChesnay and Barbara Anderson, are leading experts in vulnerable populations with the authority and credentials to present this work.
Features
The book covers specific topics in short, application-focused chapters that are divided into five thematic units: Concepts and Theories; Research; Practice and Programs; Teaching and Learning; and Policy. A wide variety of subjects, populations that illustrate focused interventions, and exemplars are provided. Missing are interventions specific to individuals and families supporting individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD). Of particular interest to me is the adaptation of adults with IDD after public education services end.

This is a useful instructional guide for students and practitioners who care for vulnerable populations. At the undergraduate and graduate level, students could use this to address specific vulnerable populations and develop projects within their courses or practice areas. For active practitioners, this book is a useful guide to apply theoretical frameworks, evidence-based interventions, identify community resources, and advocate for policy for vulnerable populations.
