Description
The core concepts presented in this bedside guide to pre- and post-anesthesia nursing care are based on the standards of the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN). Postsurgical patients recover in various areas of the hospital and this book can be a resource for all nurses caring for these patients.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide a resource for nurses caring for postsurgical patients in any area of the hospital. There is a variety of areas where surgical patients can recover, and this book is excellent in addressing the needs in all of these. Nurses using this resource will be assured of providing care that is safe and that meets ASPAN standards.
Audience
The audience is any nurse caring for a perianesthesia patient and the family. I would extend the audience to include student nurses and advanced practice nurses. I would recommend this book for any area where perianesthesia patients are receiving nursing care, both inpatient and outpatient.
Features
The book starts with foundation standards for perianesthesia nursing care in any arena. Comprehensive chapters then cover nursing care of patients with comorbidities and surgery-specific considerations. The foundation chapters cover the actual physical layout of the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) and staffing recommendations. This section also discusses common concerns such as postanesthesia nausea and vomiting and pain. The next section discusses population-specific principles for surgery patients with comorbidities. The final section covers surgery-specific principles of specific surgeries and important assessments for each. The question-answer format is useful to quickly review important principles. One of the underlying concepts is safety for the patient and family as they travel through the system and home. I would recommend that patient and family education be woven into the text at a higher level, especially with an increase in outpatient care and the shortened lengths of stay. One helpful feature is the use of color tabs alongside the pages, which helps readers tell at a glance which section they need.
Assessment
This book is unique in its focus on nurses caring for perianesthesia patients across all venues where nursing care is delivered. The question-answer format makes it easy to read and locate specific information. This format is similar to Essentials of Perioperative Nursing, 6th edition, Goodman and Spry (Jones & Bartlett, 2017), which I find very user friendly. Other books in this field that I have used make it hard to locate specific information and do not address vulnerable populations or specific surgical procedures. I am going to add this book as a reference for my perioperative elective course, so students can explore postsurgical care in a logical way that includes the specific population and the surgical procedure.
