Description
This book features drug profile blocks with full drug information including dosing, mechanisms of action, indications and contraindications, and special considerations. The book also features EMS-based case studies. This is the second edition, last published in 2012. |
Purpose
The book is both a learning tool and reference material. It is an easy and understandable guide to prehospital pharmacology, typically one of the most challenging components of paramedic education. The book is geared toward both new EMS professionals as well as those who are currently practicing. The book shines in its problem-oriented structure as well as its drug profile content. |
Audience
While the book is geared toward paramedics, it is appropriate for EMTs looking to advance their knowledge of pharmacology. The book meets the needs of a wide audience from students to experienced professionals. It is an excellent reference resource; however, it is in need of updating. The author brings his knowledge of EMS as a prior paramedic as well as his pharmacology knowledge as a physician and trauma surgeon. |
Features
The book is structured in a problem-based manner by organ system. This structure makes the material easy to assimilate and apply. The drug profiles serve as a helpful reference tool and the case studies illustrate actual EMS application. Unfortunately, the content is fairly dated and there is a lack of photos and illustrations. |
Assessment
The book is more approachable than Prehospital Emergency Pharmacology, 8th Edition, Bledsoe and Clayden (Pearson, 2019) or Pharmacology Applications, Rev. Ed., Pollack et al. (AAOS, 2016), but it is in need of significant updating as it appears to be five to 10 years out of date with current prehospital clinical practice. |
