Description
This is the second edition of a book that reviews the basics of infection control as they apply specifically to dentistry. It also reviews communicable diseases that may be encountered in the field of dentistry.
Purpose
The primary purpose is to provide science-based guidelines for infection control in the dental setting to the entire dental team. The second purpose is to contribute to health initiatives in the U.K. as well as globally. Universal precautions on dental safety for dental workers and patients are clearly outlined.
Audience
According to the authors, the book is designed for every member of the dental team with the added purpose of every member following the exact same guidelines. The book can serve as a guideline for students or dental healthcare providers. The authors have used reputable sources and have consulted various health organizations.
Features
The topics are organized in a clear manner that is easy to follow. The book provides information and serves as a reference guide to be used during clinical practice. Clear illustrations assist readers in following the guide, and helpful tabs are used throughout for easy reference. Additional resources and websites are listed to help readers in researching further topics as needed. Infection prevention is listed in detail as well as the daily infection control procedures that are used in a dental setting, such as managing dental waste. It is helpful that the guide is organized in a way that makes sense for the daily tasks of dental healthcare providers from start to finish. There are website offerings available for this book, but, unfortunately, I currently don't have access to be able to evaluate them.
Assessment
This is a reputable source of infection control and prevention protocols, and this update is necessary to maintain current guidelines on infection control. The book can be used as an additional resource for U.S.-based practices, but it may not be suitable as the sole book because some information is pertinent only to U.K. practice. The book is very thorough if used for proper practice guidelines, but more detail may be necessary based on individual practices.
