Description
This is a softcover guide to the initial diagnostic evaluation and management of injured patients in the emergency department that will clearly be useful to those in other disciplines treating injury.
Purpose
It uses a "how-to" approach to common, life-threatening traumatic injuries as they present in the emergency department.
Audience
Emergency medicine providers are the intended audience for this book, which is written by emergency medicine providers from programs throughout the U.S. Providers in other disciplines managing trauma, including surgeons and surgical subspecialists, will also appreciate the concise guidance in this book.
Features
Initial chapters provide an excellent overview of the approach to trauma presenting in the emergency department. In particular, it presents the ABCs of injury along with airway management techniques and the use of blood products. The book rapidly evolves to the identification and management of injury in other body regions including neurological trauma of various kinds, facial injuries, spine trauma, torso injuries, and several types of orthopedic trauma. A brief chapter introduces care for burns and electrocution. Chapters are well written and feature excellent illustrations and subheadings. Important data such as medications, doses, risks, and optimal utilization is easy to find. There is a large number of well-reproduced color illustrations. The quality of photography, both of clinical material and radiological studies, is impressive for a relatively small handbook. Each chapter contains an ample reference list. While citations date to within two years of publication, classic entries in primary literature are emphasized.
Assessment
This is a wonderful introduction for providers in any discipline managing injury at the time of presentation in the emergency department. Concise, well-written presentations make this an excellent bedside reference. After review of the opening chapters, readers can progress to the organ system of interest. For those less familiar with injury, comments on procedural sedation and commonly missed traumatic problems are an important aid.
