Description
This is an update of a comprehensive book that defines quality nutrition research design and details nearly every step of the research process such as grant writing, study type selection, subject recruitment, developing hypotheses, nutrition assessment and evaluation, nutrition outcome measures, etc. The previous edition was published in 2007.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide a resource to help readers better understand how well-designed nutrition and dietary research creates and influences evidence-based recommendations and nutrition policy. These are worthy objectives as the book is based on the critical components for quality research: that the research study has validity, accuracy, and precision.
Audience
This book is intended for nutrition students, professors, and practitioners. The book targets those in nutritional sciences, clinical nutrition, and public health. The authors are both well-known nutrition scientists and registered dietitians who have served as research editors or editors-in-chief of nutrition science journals.
Features
The book details components of designing and conducting nutrition research, methods of analysis, and research evaluation. It reviews different types of studies (i.e. RCTs or cross-sectional studies), the differences and similarities among qualitative versus quantitative data, nutrition monitoring and databases, data collection methods and analysis, etc. One of the best aspects of the book is the concise list of boxes, tables, and figures so that readers can easily get a general sense of the chapter's topic. There is little use of diagrams and pictures (aside from charts), which could increase the book's appeal; however, illustrations are not necessarily needed when discussing research.
Assessment
This book explains research design and methods for various topics in nutrition and diet such as assessing diet, food databases, nutrition surveys and FFQs, nutritional biomarkers, dietary supplements, diet and human genetics, etc. It is very detailed in discussing statistical analysis and how data can be delivered in research articles (i.e. the use of different charts, tables, graphs, etc.). The book organizes the chapters into broad sections, which is helpful. There appear to be other books with similar objectives, such as Analysis in Nutrition Research: Principles of Statistical Methodology and Interpretation of the Results, Pounis (Elsevier, 2019). From what I can determine, that book also presents the different types of nutrition study designs, data collection, and analysis, but does not group the chapters into sections. It also appears to dedicate more chapters to specific dietary components and their relationship to disease.
