Description
This update of a 2006 edition covers the basics of sports nutrition regarding macronutrient intake and hydration as well as the nutritional needs of populations other than just high-level, elite athletes. It also addresses the nutritional needs in specific sports and uses charts to provide useful summaries of these various topics.
Purpose
The book is designed as a go-to resource for professionals in the field of sports nutrition, and it also can be used as a textbook for a sports nutrition class. There are few sports nutrition resources that break down the facts and information the way that this book does.
Audience
It is intended for sports dietitians and students in the field. It is general enough to cater to those learning the field, but complex enough to meet the needs of a sports registered dietitian (RD). Both editors are well known and well respected in the area of sports nutrition.
Features
The many case studies are helpful in demonstrating the practical application of the information. The few pictures and graphs are simple and basic, although they do illustrate the concepts. The book covers the important topics of supplementation and eating disorders. However, the supplement chapter does lack some information. It would have been helpful to include the rules and regulations regarding supplementation of the various sport governing bodies organizations such as the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, the International Olympic Committee, and others.
Assessment
This is a great resource for professionals, new RDs, students, and others interested in sports nutrition. It is a very useful tool for working with active populations. It is more detailed than others in the field, but still basic enough so it is easy to understand.
