Description
This book covers type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes nutrition management together in one book. It is meant as a practical tool covering the nutrition needs of the individual experiencing pregnancy from preconception through postpartum.
Purpose
The purpose of the book is to help readers individualize the care (specifically, the nutritional needs) of all people with diabetes during their pregnancies. These are worthy objectives since more individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes are becoming pregnant and healthcare professionals need evidence-based nutrition recommendations to follow.
Audience
This book is written for all healthcare professionals working with people with diabetes who intend to become pregnant or are already pregnant. Since the book's focus is nutrition in diabetes and pregnancy, I personally feel the content is more useful to registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) since they are the primary providers of medical nutrition therapy. However, I can certainly see this as a reference in a clinic or office that could be used by all healthcare professionals. The authors appear to be credible authorities, although I would have liked to see more reviewers who are practicing clinicians. Half of the reviewers are owners of their own companies or professors.
Features
After the preface, a publisher's note is included discussing gender-inclusive language. The book uses the term "individual who experiences pregnancy" instead of focusing on women, which would exclude transgender and nonbinary people. It also comments that this book does not address care of transgender men during pregnancy since there is limited research. The book covers all three types of diabetes in each of its chapters, which include three chapters covering the overview of diabetes and pregnancy, three chapters covering diabetes management from preconception to postpartum, and two chapters covering prescription and non-prescription medication use. Four case studies are included after the chapters covering gestational diabetes, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and preconception care in type 2 diabetes. Finally, the book includes six appendices, a glossary (which also defines transgender and nonbinary), dietary reference intakes during pregnancy and lactation, a sample food log (which was a bit too basic to be useful), herbal supplements to avoid during pregnancy, and a prenatal questionnaire in both English and Spanish. Each chapter includes objectives, figures, text boxes, and references and sections have large, bold titles. Each chapter is general in content. Since each chapter covers all three types of diabetes, it would be difficult for someone who is interested in type 1 diabetes and pregnancy to easily glean the information needed. Also, the content is spread throughout each chapter, making it hard to focus on one topic without having to thumb through to various chapters. The case studies are very practical, highlighting the focus of the book on dietitians. For the type 1 diabetes case study, the dietitian "met" with the individual at weeks 8, 20, 34, and twice postpartum, while my personal experience is that these individuals require far more frequent interactions.
Assessment
This book is a useful general resource for all healthcare professionals, but it would be used best by a practicing registered dietitian nutritionist.
