Description
This is the second edition of a reference highlighting key information in oncology nutrition. The first edition was published in 2018; however, when I reviewed that text in 2018, the introduction mentioned the first edition was published in 2013, which would technically make this a third edition. This version also only speaks of the first edition being published in 2013. Regardless of the discrepancy in each introduction, either timespan would require an update to the information presented.
Purpose
The purpose remains the same as previous editions, and that is to provide up-to-date core information about the role of nutrition in the prevention and care of individuals with cancer. The introduction also comments on a complementary compilation of handouts and education tools sold separately. The book meets the objectives set forth by the editors.
Audience
The book is published by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the primary organization of registered dietitian nutritionists. It is meant as a reference and tool for nutrition professionals, but it would be a useful resource for all healthcare professionals. The many contributors all work in oncology and appear to be credible authorities on the topics they have written.
Features
The update contains the same number of chapters as the previous edition. However, the appendices have been significantly reduced to only three appendices with much of their previous information omitted. The book focuses on nutrition through the cancer continuum, placing a strong emphasis on survivorship. As stated before, it is RDN-focused, integrating the Nutrition Care Process and key RDN documentation within patient charting. Each of the 27 chapters includes tables, figures, and key information on each topic. The multiple tables and figures are summarized by location at the beginning of the book. Since the book is meant as a resource on oncology nutrition, it is expected that readers already have the basic knowledge in these areas. This book is meant to provide key information in a concise manner. For example, the chapters on medical nutrition therapy (MNT) of various cancers include multiple tables and figures to provide the precise information needed. The first five chapters discuss general cancer information, radiation oncology, energy balance, physical activity, nutrition risk screening, and nutrition needs. Chapters 6 and 7 focus on integrative oncology and functional foods. A new chapter in this edition includes rationale and guidance for the use of medicinal cannabis in cancer treatment. The font is a bit larger with more white space to make it easier to read and digest the key information provided.
Assessment
This book continues to be a concise, up-to-date reference for nutrition professionals who work with oncology patients or any healthcare professionals interested in a useful resource for oncology nutrition.
