Description
This ninth edition continues to be a comprehensive resource and learning tool encompassing all aspects of medical nutrition therapy. This updated edition is published by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), the main organization for the over 70,000 registered dietitian nutritionists. The previous edition was published by Wolters Kluwer in 2015 and was accompanied by online resources that included animations, audio clips, videos, and images from the text. This updated edition is available in textbook format or as an ebook that can only be read on the AND eReader.
Purpose
The purpose is to highlight the role of food and nutrition in the treatment and care of individuals and their positive outcomes on reduction of comorbidities, length of stay, and healthcare costs. The book continues to meet these objectives.
Audience
The author is very clear about the intended audience. First, readers must have adequate background in nutrition sciences, physiology and pathophysiology, medical terminology, biochemistry, basic pharmacotherapy, and interpretation of biochemical data. It is written primarily for registered dietitian nutritionists in practice, interns, and upper-level students, as well as other healthcare professionals involved or interested in medical nutrition therapy. The author mentions the book can be used to write protocols, establish nutrition priorities, and demonstrate cost-effective therapies. The author has been an authority on the topic through all nine editions.
Features
This edition continues to follow the same organization as previous editions, with all the same sections with some minor alterations. It includes 16 sections (basically chapters) instead of the previous 17, each covering a different topic, using the same format of chief assessment, hot topic textboxes (Hot Boxes), definitions and background, assessment, monitoring and evaluation, intervention, nutrition education, counseling and care management tips, sample nutrition care process steps included in mini case studies in all the chapters, and website resources. Section 9 is still Endocrine Disorders, and continues to cover diabetes and treatment using multiple tables and textboxes with key information. However, just like the previous edition, some references are outdated. For the "Classification of Diabetes" text box, the author uses the 2016 Standards of Medical Care. Since these standards are updated annually, this is quite old information. The author did use the 2021 references for a few other tables, so this most likely was an oversight. Also, the table of types of insulin in the previous edition had some omissions and it continues to be outdated. Toujeo was omitted again as well as two newer rapid acting insulins, Fiasp and Lyumjev. I will not be using this book as my primary source of diabetes information, but it would be nice if the book kept topics updated. The four appendices include basic nutrition principles, macronutrients, micronutrients, and vitamins as well as the nutrition care process and the accompanying forms used by dietitians. One of the appendices focuses solely on culturally sensitive and inclusive nutrition care, education, and counseling. The book also begins with a statement regarding use of gender-inclusive language throughout the textbook.
Assessment
While this book is essential for nutrition professionals, it also can be an invaluable tool for all other healthcare professionals in practice. This update continues to meet the needs of registered dietitian nutritionists and enhance their role in overall patient care.
