Description
This is a well illustrated color atlas of oral histology.
Purpose
The objective is to aid students in identifying the microscopic anatomy of normal oral tissue.
Audience
The target audience is undergraduate students in dentistry and histology who are studying the microscopic anatomy of normal oral tissues. Through the use of numerous high quality color photomicrographs, the author achieves his goal of providing a teaching text and, as such, this should prove to be very beneficial to the target audience.
Features
The text is a pictorial review of histology of the tissues that normally make up the dentin, enamel, pulp, and cementum of the teeth, as well as the periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, oral mucosa, salivary glands, and TMJ. The author also reviews tooth development, eruption, and shedding. The most outstanding aspect of this book is the labeled color illustrations of oral histologic structure. This will serve as a helpful reference for the students as an adjunct to their training. One improvement that the author may consider for a subsequent edition is the order of some of the contents. If the section on tooth eruption and shedding were rearranged to follow tooth development, this would provide a more logical progression of events for student review.
Assessment
This is a very innovative text as most books on the subject are focused on written text with much fewer illustrations. This should prove to be a valuable training aid for students of oral histology.
