Description
This is the second volume in a planned 5-volume series on preventive and community dentistry. The first volume, published last year, was entitled An Introduction to Risk Prediction and Preventive Dentistry. |
Purpose
The author presents current knowledge of caries etiology, host susceptibility, risk factors, caries diagnosis, and epidemiology. Dental caries is an issue rarely discussed in this level of detail, and the author covers the subject comprehensively. |
Audience
This book is intended for general dentists. The content may be of most interest to dentists treating high-risk populations, academics, and those interested in dental community health or minimally invasive dentistry. The author has been researching preventive dental services in Sweden for 25 years. |
Features
This volume begins with a review of cariology and oral microbiology. Subsequent sections cover host factors, diet, systemic disease, and hard tissue contributions to development of caries. There are extensive black-and- white and color illustrations. Graphs from Axelsson and other researchers are used throughout to highlight hard data and trends over time. Large sections are devoted to prediction of individual caries risk, including practical algorithms for rapid assessment of age-stratified caries risk. The 70-page chapter devoted to diagnosis and treatment of incipient decay and early caries is particularly well illustrated. It expounds the European sensibility for explorer-free caries detection and remineralization. For U.S. readers, this provides a counterpoint to methods taught in dental schools. The volume concludes with a critical review of epidemiology and diagnostic methods. |
Assessment
This book provides a comprehensive discussion of modern methods of diagnosing caries on the individual and population levels. There is a wealth of condensed research data and information for individual practitioners relating to trends in modern dental practice. |
