Description
This book covers complementary therapies in the nursing profession, divided into six areas. The first section discusses the foundations for practice and serves as an introduction to the five different categories of complementary therapies. This is the ninth edition.
Purpose
The purpose of this book is to inform practitioners and nurses regarding the use of complementary therapies in the profession. As the demand for complementary therapies grows, the book serves to educate and review the complementary therapies patients may request. The objectives in the book help nursing practitioners to better understand the evolution and use of complementary therapies and integrative care as well as the way in which these therapies can help to create an optimal healing environment for patients. The book meets its objectives and provides a better understanding and in-depth discussion of the five areas of complementary therapies. The five areas are supported by current research, which further encourages the use of complementary therapy in mainstream medicine.
Audience
The book targets anyone in the nursing profession, including students and those in the field. The book definitely meets the needs of the intended audience. The three main authors are credible based on credentials. There are also 47 domestic contributors and 59 international contributors to the publication.
Features
The book is divided into the five main categories of complementary therapy and also focuses on cultural awareness in treating patients. It is well written and covers mind-body therapies and energy healing therapies in great detail, as well as how these therapies can be incorporated by both patients and the practitioners. The writing is clear and concise and is supported by current publications. The greatest shortcoming is in the manipulative and body-based therapy section -- while it does discuss massage, it fails to mention chiropractic or acupuncture therapies, both of which are included in the literature as manipulative and body-based therapies.
Assessment
This book serves as a great reference for nurses. It successfully introduces a variety of alternative therapies to a profession that has a strong medical influence. The updated and current information makes this ninth edition worthwhile.
