Description
This book, now in its 12th edition, serves as an evidenced-based, quick reference for a diverse panel of healthcare clinicians seeking to provide comprehensive, holistic care to women. It presents a plethora of evidence-based, women-centered examples as written by experienced women's health nurse practitioners. Readers will find a compilation of common disease processes with defining criteria, etiologies, historical and physical findings, differential diagnoses, treatments, consultation guidelines, and follow up.
Purpose
Modern literature postulates that women are the gateway to the family. The family benefits when the lives of women are positively changed, particularly through improved health. Women's health continues to evolve to consider the diverse physical, psychological, and biopsychosocial health needs of females across the lifespan. All providers, especially women's health clinicians, must be prepared to address the wide-ranging and unique health needs of women in a variety of settings. Women deserve comprehensive, evidence-based gynecological, primary health, and mental health services based on the best evidence and practice standards, in accordance with patient and family values. Therefore, education, knowledge, and skill are needed to address the health needs of modern women in the 21st century. It is pertinent for providers to comprehend how disease uniquely presents and progresses in women, so clinical decision making can occur based on established knowledge, research results, and informed judgments. With that knowledge, providers may tailor unique treatment plans for women across the lifespan to deliver high-quality care. The purpose of this book is to provide core concepts of evidence-based and culturally relevant information to provide gynecological care for women. The authors wrote the book to offer creative, analytical, and nuanced approaches for delivering quality and compassionate care for patients identifying as female. Further, the authors prefaced the book by informing readers of the women-centered language included throughout the book. By prefacing gynecology as the language of women, the authors acknowledge the uniqueness of health-related problems specific to this gender. The authors meet the objectives of the book with the organization of content focused on a gamut of evidence-based and best practices for developing treatment plans for women's health in the clinical setting. Clinical research is complemented by several case studies ranging from contraception to vaginitis and vaginosis to enhance the critical thinking skills of the readers.
Audience
The authors purport this book is written for advanced practice registered nurses such as nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, clinical nurse specialists, physician assistants, or for role preparation of students. As a women's health and adult nurse practitioner with more than a decade of practice and teaching experience, I found this book particularly resourceful. When reviewing the literary talents of others, I consider whether the book was written from diverse perspectives and for erudite insight. This book contains diversity as it relates to diagnoses and treatment plans for a variety of patients. I learned new information regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) health, as members of this dynamic population identifying as female deserve access to women's health services. This book contains various manners to enhance communication with these clients, which may lead to improved clinical decision making and better outcomes for this vulnerable group. The authors' diverse recommendations are summarized from national organizations and leading authorities and are cited at the end of each section.
Features
The book is presented in an easy-to-read format that providers may utilize in the practice setting as a refresher or guide when providing comprehensive health services to patients who identify as female. It is succinctly and logically written and is the ultimate quick reference. It summarizes the standards, rules, and best practices for gynecological care. The best aspect is the specificity to women's health and gynecology. The writing is clear without subject matter ambiguity. The subtitles are further broken down to disease-specific processes. One shortcoming of the book is the inclusion of only one type of cliniciannurse practitionerswhen the intended audience is nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse midwifes, physician assistants, and students. The authors could have changed the phrase "nurse practitioners" to "clinicians" or "providers" as this would encompass a diverse panel of women's health caregivers and is more inclusive.
Assessment
The evidence-based, diverse, and gender-specific content makes this a good reference book for medical providers caring for female-identifying patients. Educators tasked with providing women's health resources for students will find a compilation of best practices and women-centered information for women across the lifespan. The information in the book is compiled from national organizations and leading authorities in women's health. Medical professionals, educators, preceptors, and/or students will find an easily navigable book with clear objectives and examples of physical, psychological, social, cultural, and health-related problems for women. Women's health is outcomes-focused and time-sensitive. Up-to-date knowledge of women's health issues is required since best practices are continuously developing. Therefore, new editions of women-centered books will generate new knowledge, which will help to advance women's health and keep the focus on improving health outcomes for women. Nuanced women's health knowledge promotes equitable care for all identifying as female. As a women's health provider for more than a decade, actively practicing and teaching, I plan to add this book to my clinical resources for women. This book is relevant and advances women's health. The 12th edition includes new authors, which contributes to new perspectives. In addition, the updated 12th edition includes up-to-date and endemic challenges facing women such as substance abuse, gender identity, updated sexually transmitted disease guidelines and treatments, and nuanced contraception methods, which have changed since the previous edition. The newest edition is pertinent for up-to-date women's health. The book is compatible to other quick reference manuals with women's health information such as SOAP for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Uzelac (Wolters Kluwer, 2005). However, this current book is not as easily navigable or illustrative as another favorite quick reference titled Clinical Coach for Nurse Practitioners, Hensley and Williams (F.A. Davis Company, 2009), which offers quick tabs, color variances, alerts, and tables.
