Description
This is a solid reference on the use of complementary and alternative therapies, specifically in the practice of nursing. This edition includes up-to-date, relevant additions to content and research since the previous edition was published in 2013. |
Purpose
As complementary and integrative health approaches to care continue to gain both popular and clinical research support, due in large part to dedicated nursing leaders integrating these approaches into their care, a book that pulls together current research with clinical practice in a nursing context is necessary. This edition fills that need perfectly. |
Audience
The book is intended primarily for a nursing audience and will be a valuable resource for student nurses and advanced practice clinicians. The book also holds immeasurable value for practitioners of these approaches to care as well. It includes a mix of information relevant to study, credentialing, practice, and research. The authors and contributors are all leaders in nursing and healthcare practice and education. |
Features
Using the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health's classification system of integrative health modalities and approaches (alternative or complete/whole medical systems; mind-body-spirit-interventions; biologically based systems; manipulative and body-based methods; energy therapies), the book explores each approach through the lens of pertinence to nursing practice. Each chapter includes a description and brief history of the technique, detailed suggestions for how a nurse could use the approach (including appropriate indications/contraindications), as well as resources for making appropriate referrals. As in previous editions, particular attention is paid to current research findings and suggestions for avenues of future research. Each chapter includes a bountiful reference section of peer-reviewed material and a detailed index at the end of the book is useful for quick reference. |
Assessment
This is an excellent resource for nurses in training, currently in practice, or those called to education or research. This update includes three new chapters and up-to-date details on the ever-changing landscape of credentialing and regulations, as well as an expanded focus on finding credible referral targets useful for patients and self-care for nurses themselves. This edition also has a focus on how to bring these approaches to a new health system as well as incorporating them into the now ubiquitous electronic health record. Overall, this edition makes a solid case for the how's and why's of integrating a holistic approach to nursing care in the 21st century. |
