Description
This book is a concise review tour through the very broad specialty that is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Although it is not fully comprehensive and all-encompassing regarding the field of PM&R, it is a tremendous overview that highlights board-relevant material and delivers the information in easy-to-follow chapters. It provides an excellent base of up-to-date neurologic, general medical, and orthopedic rehabilitation material that can be found useful by physiatrists at all stages of career, from the fourth-year medical student seeking to better understand important concepts prior to a sub-internship, all the way to the seasoned attending physician in need of helpful preparation for recertification. Compared to the 2014 third edition, the fourth edition provides numerous updates with particular improvements in the rheumatology and cancer sections. It utilizes a healthy amount of quality illustrations throughout and uses a well-organized bullet point outline format that stresses board pearls very well. With the hard copy comes access to online resources and an ebook version, allowing for better learning on the go and quick access to references for further studying. The online version allows for improved ability to search specific topics or subjects of interest and has a valuable "focus" view for enhanced online studying.
Purpose
The main purpose is to be the primary resource of board-related material for PM&R residents and practicing physiatrists undergoing board review. There are few books out there that provide focused board-relevant material for PM&R physicians, so the need for the information in this book is absolutely essential. The ability of this book to have both print and online access adds extreme value for on-the-go physicians. One can catch up on a chapter using their phone in between clinic appointments or be able to use both the print and online versions at the same time during a dedicated study session to compare information. Dr. Cuccurullo and her coauthors certainly have achieved their objective of filling the void of PM&R board review with this latest edition.
Audience
The intended audience is for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residents and attending physicians preparing for board review and recertification. It is also extremely pertinent and valuable for residents to use as a first line study resource throughout their residency training as they rotate through various subspecialties in PM&R. Medical students who are interested in the field will find it to be a great resource to better conceptually understand various topics and apply toward management of patients they are caring for. It absolutely meets the needs of the intended audience; I don't think you'll find one PM&R resident out there who hasn't benefited from the information in this book. The word "Cuccurullo" is synonymous with physiatry royalty; it carries credible recognition whenever used and it is known that when Dr. Cuccurullo is involved, it deserves your attention. She is one of the most widely recognized and credentialed physicians in PM&R and the success of her past editions confirm the excellence of this book.
Features
PM&R is a truly broad and diverse field with topics and specialty areas within that are very widespread. It would be nearly impossible to cover all of what PM&R encompasses, but this title puts forth a fine effort at providing concise information regarding a variety of subject areas and patient management. I find the whole book organization to be outstanding, with chapters that flow well conceptually and visually due to short, to-the-point sentences and use of bullet points. The images and figures used are above average in quality and usefulness and are neither too infrequent or overbearing. I rarely feel overwhelmed by the amount of content on any given page. I love the use of the open-book icon to indicate a significant board-relevant pearl; a feature that some review books lack. Specifically, I found that this title covers neurorehabilitation topics particularly well (i.e., TBI, SCI, stroke chapters). The explanation of anatomy and clinical pathology is very well put together in nearly all sections and is expertly taught in the musculoskeletal chapter. As far as shortcomings, the ultrasound section is lacking and deserves more thorough attention. More details and clinical management information regarding procedures and injections for all topics would be helpful in future editions.
Assessment
This book is an absolute must-have piece of literature for residents in training going into PM&R and adds noteworthy improvements compared to previous editions. When you don't need all of the intricate details of the nuances and subspecialties within physiatry, but you do need a nearly comprehensive review of the field to help hammer home important concepts and solidify your knowledge regarding the field, this should be one of your top resources. There simply aren't very many other review resources in PM&R that can hold up to the content available in this book.
