Purpose The purpose is "to describe new techniques and technologies to reduce caregivers' risk associated with high-risk patient handling." As the authors indicate, 35 pounds is a safe limit, but most patients weigh more than 35 pounds. Audience This book is written for students, direct caregivers, managers, administrators, risk managers, educators, industrial/safety professionals, and researchers. It would have wide appeal because of the number of individuals who are responsible for patient movement and transfer in both acute and long-term care settings. The three authors are all experts in the areas of safety and occupational health. The contributors, who include registered nurses, physical therapists, and occupational therapists, add expertise in their areas. Features Each chapter has a similar layout/outline. The authors address unique challenges in safe handling, high risk tasks, objectives, and general directions for all tasks. The remainder of the chapter focuses on tasks such as (in the medical-surgical nursing setting) placement of a bedpan and application of compression stockings. Illustrations are minimal, but a DVD that comes with the book demonstrates safe patient handling. Each chapter has a pretest and post test to measure acquisition of knowledge. Assessment This is a good reference for the varied healthcare professionals who must move and transfer patients. The book is clear and well written, with illustrations to strengthen the narrative.
