Description
This is an evidence-based handbook for the care of elderly hospitalized individuals. Information in each section has been gathered by the chapter authors, synthesized, and used to develop standard of practice protocols. Strength of evidence is rated. This book is a revision of the previous edition published in 2003.
Purpose
The intent is to make the most current evidence-based guidelines available to all who practice in the geriatric realm. This includes nursing students and a wide variety of practitioners at all levels of expertise from management and specialty roles to bedside care. With ever increasing evidence that gerontology is a true specialty we have an obligation to keep current in practice. This book offers the most current guidelines and allows readers to see the strength of the evidence as the guidelines are being recommended. It also teaches the importance of evidence when making practice decisions.
Audience
The book is well organized and easy to use. Supporting references that might be used for further study end each chapter. Case studies help users see the application of the recommended protocols. This book could be used as either a text for teaching or a reference for those in practice. Although the book is primarily meant for a hospital setting, much of this information is also applicable in other venues such as long-term care. The editors and authors are a who's who in gerontology. Many are well known and respected names in the field with countless publications in their areas of expertise.
Features
Of the book's 29 chapters, 13 are new. Several of the original chapters have been revised with more current evidence. A section in the introduction explains how to best use the book. The first chapter explains developing and evaluating clinical practice guidelines and the use of evidence in the development of this book. All chapters contain educational objectives and a section on overview and background that leads into the assessment and treatment protocols.
Assessment
As a gerontological clinical educator/research nurse, I will often use this as a reference. The format and the content are good, and the explanations of how to best use the evidence simplify the process of sifting through mountains of information to figure the best practice. The 13 new chapters on topics such as dementia, nutrition in aging, and sensory changes make this a worthwhile replacement for the previous edition.
