Description
This is an important book for advanced practice psychiatric nurses. It presents options that have not been readily available for the treatment of complex clients and provides overviews and instructions for integrating alternative and traditional therapies for psychiatric patients.
Purpose
The authors state that the purpose is "to validate and encourage PMH-APRNs (psychiatric-mental health advanced practice registered nurses) to draw from as wide an information base as possible during clinical practice." They note that the book builds on interpersonal and psychodynamic roots of the psychiatric-mental health nursing specialty to provide multiple choices of interventions in order to individualize treatment. These are exciting and worthy goals for the practice of PMH-APRNs.
Audience
The book is written for and by PMH-APRNs in direct patient care. In addition to serving as a classroom textbook, it is also set up to be used as a study guide for those preparing for certification. The editors and authors of each section are experts in this field.
Features
Using authoritative sources such as the scope and standards developed by the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses, and in collaboration with the American Nurses Association, the book expands on psychotherapeutic techniques and the APRN role in psychiatric nursing. The book is a holistic, integrative, mind-body approach that is organized by symptom clusters. This organization allows for the appropriate choice of intervention/treatment based on the symptom.
Assessment
There are few new books to direct PMH-APRN treatment options. This one can be compared to Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nursing, Burgess (Prentice Hall, 1997), which provided what was known about the advanced practice role in psychiatric nursing at that time. Now, this book provides the path to integration of treatment options for the holistic care of psychiatric client by PMH-APRNs.
