Description
Dr. Dolan has orchestrated and expertly produced a book that offers the reader clear, consistent, and worthwhile experiences on a panoply of subjects relating to facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Purpose
From the get-go those delving into this informative tome will note a uniformity of purpose, which is to impart a "comprehensive yet practical review of facial plastic surgery" for both the uninitiated and the already established facial surgeon. This noteworthy challenge has been met by the writers.
Audience
The editor has assembled a multitude of specialists, centered upon otolaryngologists, to provide an educational resource for residents and practicing physicians in this specialty, but residents, medical students, and those surgeons who have already honed their skills in other specialties could also use this compact guide to facial plastic surgery.
Features
A cornucopia of information relating to facial plastic, cosmetic, reconstructive, and traumatic surgery is packed into this 27 chapter book. Dr. Dolan writes on a fair number of the subjects and manages to maintain a similar voice throughout the remainder of the book. The various chapters are constructed to begin at the beginning and build up to surgical techniques and information. Adding to the comprehension factor are a plethora of drawings and black-and-white photographs. Colorizing the book would be a nice touch, but this is not a serious detriment. Initial evaluation of the patients' skin and skeletal framework coupled with principles of wound healing are precursors to the chapters on surgical intervention. Facial cosmetic surgery of the nose, ear, face along with skin resurfacing, treatment of hair loss, and augmentation of the cheek and chin are subsequently considered. The remaining sections soundly present background information and procedures necessary to deal with congenital defects, neoplasms, soft and hard tissue injuries and the means to reconstruct or reshape these problematic areas.
Assessment
This is a well executed book which will undoubtedly benefit its readers. It supplies basic and moderately advanced information to those just beginning in this area and affords the more experienced practitioners an opportunity to add to their knowledge base.
