Description
This book provides an easy to use resource and reference for the clinical application and understanding of common procedures done in a primary care practice. Procedures are grouped by major body system and include indications, contraindication, CPT codes, and client instructions.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide procedural resources for nurse practitioners in ambulatory care. It serves as a reference tool and is particularly useful to those new to practice needing to develop new skills not taught normally in nurse practitioner programs. The book fulfills its intended purpose and is a necessary addition to any nurse practitioner's library.
Audience
The book is intended for both new nurse practitioners preparing to enter practice and for experienced nurse practitioners seeking to enhance their clinical procedure skills. In addition, the book can serve as a guide for the development of procedure protocols for administrators or clinicians in ambulatory care practices. The book is appropriately targeted for these audiences and the author and contributors are credible authorities.
Features
Divided into logical sections by major body systems, the book is easy to follow. Each procedure has seven sections: overview, health promotion/prevention, specific options for the performance of the procedure, rationale, indications, contraindications and equipment required. Post procedure instructions for patients are provided. In addition, the book provides current CPT codes for each procedure to assist with accurate billing. Although it does contain procedures that are normally beyond the scope of NPs, these are helpful in order to advise patients and assist others in a practice. The references are current and appropriate.
Assessment
This practical guide is valuable for any nurse practitioner to have in his/her clinical library. I have not seen any other book published that has nurse practitioners' practice specifically addressed. A must have for student, new and experienced nurse practitioners.
