Purpose It is intended as a comprehensive textbook and a practical clinical guide for the field. Audience The book is appropriate for highly-motivated residents or for more experienced practitioners. It is likely above the level of the novice or student. Features This is an excellent comprehensive review of emergency medicine. Each section does a superb job of capturing the questions that continually arise in practice. When available, the most up-to-date evidence is cited, supported by clinical opinion from practitioners of distinction. The opening sections, which provide a brief, concentrated discussion of high risk ("true emergency") cases, are an outstanding landmark that sets this book apart. Although the pictures are excellent, many suffer from the lack of color. Assessment In the company of an excellent collection of similar resources, this book stands strong and offers an important voice and perspective at a level appropriate for many practitioners. It artfully avoids the risks of irrelevance and wordiness. Its strength lies in the relevance of each comment. Though extensive, it is still concise, an outstanding balance.
