Description
This update of a general obstetrics and gynecology textbook last published in 2003 has several new authors and covers additional topics including stillbirth, group B streptococci, and pelvic reconstruction surgery. Many of the tables and algorithms are updated to reflect current research and practice changes, though some are from the previous edition.
Purpose
The authors aim to provide evidence-based, current information on the practice of obstetrics and gynecology. Any medical provider practicing in these fields requires a comprehensive and current text -- this book fulfills this objective.
Audience
The authors wrote this book for practicing physicians, residents, and nurses practicing obstetrics and gynecology. Medical students planning to pursue obstetrics and gynecology will find it useful, but its depth and cost make it prohibitive for the usual six-to eight-week third-year rotation.
Features
The first half of the book covers obstetrical management of both normal and complicated pregnancies, labor, and delivery. The second half features general gynecology, surgery, urogynecology, and gynecologic oncology. A section also discusses liability, patient safety, and medical error prevention. The information is thorough enough for a medical professional practicing or learning general obstetrics or gynecology. A subspecialist would require a more focused book. The addition of orange font breaks up the text, making it easier to read.
Assessment
This serves as an excellent reference and guide for anyone in general obstetrics and/or gynecology. The information is current and updated from its previous edition. It should continue to be considered a standard text for anyone practicing obstetrics and gynecology.
