Description
This two volume book deals with spinal disorders and trauma of the spine in adults and children.
Purpose
The purpose is to present the most current information on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of spinal disorders. These worthy objectives were clearly met by the authors.
Audience
This work is written mainly for spinal surgeons in the specialties of orthopedics and neurosurgery. Others in areas such as physical medicine and rehabilitation, rheumatology, neurology, and physical therapy, can make excellent use of this textbook. One of the editors in chief, John W. Frymoyer Professor Emeritus of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, Department of Orthopaedics, University of Vermont College of Medicine, edited the first edition. The other, Sam W. Wiesel, is Professor and Chairman, Department of Orthopaedics at Georgetown University Medical Center. Both are internationally recognized orthopedic surgeons and experts on this subject. They are supported by five associate editors and scores of contributing authors who are from several spine centers from around the country. This impressive list of authors lends superior credibility to the book.
Features
Volume one covers general issues of spine disorders such as operative techniques of pediatric spine and adult deformity, diseases of the spine and diagnostic studies. Least invasive spine procedures and artificial disc replacement are covered in this volume. In volume two the cervical and thoracolumbar spine is fully discussed. Surgical procedures are dealt with in great detail. The management of back pain and spinal deformity caused by osteoporosis receives special attention. The illustrations are pertinent and adequate, but the quality of the photographs is variable. The references are thorough and relevant.
Assessment
This book makes a very important contribution to the field of spinal disorders. All aspects of a given disorder are fully covered, thereby making the work an excellent reference. The role of psychological factors, socioeconomic issues, and other environmental forces are factored into the decision-making process in caring for patients with these spinal disorders. I highly recommend this work to all spine surgeons and others caring for patients with neck and back conditions.
