Description
This guide to common adult psychiatric disorders and their treatment is meant to be a handy resource for healthcare providers.
Purpose
It is a vital portable reference for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with psychiatric illnesses.
Audience
The target audience includes psychiatrists, psychologists, primary care physicians, and other mental health providers, but it would be most useful to residents and medical students in psychiatry as well as some mental health providers.
Features
The book covers a wide range of topics in psychiatry including epidemiology, diagnostic classification, treatment, psychiatric emergencies, medications, and ethics. The unusual feature of this book is the way it presents the material. It is meant to be portable, but still contain as much as information as possible, so it uses a bullet point format with a great deal of abbreviations and no complete sentences. Tables throughout contain useful, practical information. The section on psychiatric medications is particularly good, but there is little to no in-depth discussion. There are some rare typographical errors.
Assessment
This is the best book for psychiatric residents or clinicians doing psychiatric consults or inpatient work to carry. It covers an immense amount of material. The chapters are stripped down to the most important, relevant points of almost every topic in psychiatry. The format takes some getting used to, as the typeface is small and the material is presented in a shorthand, abbreviated way. I would recommend it to any mental health professional who wants a quick, portable reference for evaluating and treating most psychiatric illnesses and disorders.
