Purpose She describes a patient-centered approach to patient teaching and explores the issues that prevent education efforts from being effective. Few books have approached this topic with the patients as partners in the process. This book has been needed for some time! Audience It is written for health professionals and is extremely useful for nursing students. As a registered nurse, licensed psychologist, and certified rehabilitation counselor, Dr. Falvo is uniquely positioned as an expert on patient-centered education. She has been a leader in this area for many years. Features As the author points out, patients must value any education efforts and will not adhere to well-intended advice unless they perceive value in doing so. She describes patient-centered teaching, where providers create a partnership with patients. Issues that can create barriers to achieving mutually established goals are discussed in detail, providing a thorough compilation of essential information. This is useful as a teaching tool and reference for healthcare professionals. Assessment The author has succeeded in producing a book that covers beautifully the task of teaching patients. The perspectives of patients and the challenges they face are presented with enough detail to be useful to novice as well as expert providers. This is the best book on this topic to date.
