This primer on the basics of medical genetics delves into selected genetic diseases in all organ systems.
The purpose is to serve as the basis for a medical genetics curriculum that provides an opportunity for healthcare students to integrate genetics knowledge, skills, and attitudes early in their education and training as well as to improve their understanding of genetics concepts in clinical medicine to ultimately improve clinical outcomes.
The book is designed to introduce the discipline of clinical genetics to physician assistant students, medical students, and other healthcare providers. Given the easy-to-read style of the book, the authors are obviously experts in their field.
Chapters cover basic genetics terminology and disease topics in all organ systems. Each chapter begins with objectives and an introductory paragraph about what the chapter covers. Pictures, figures, and tables throughout the book reinforce and clarify important points. Genetics terms are in bold. Each chapter ends with a summary, a list of key terms, chapter review questions to reinforce learning, and a list of resources for further detail.
This is an excellent book for both students and clinicians. Medical and public libraries would also find this a valuable resource. As the field of clinical genetics continues to evolve, it is hoped the authors will consider updating this book.
