Description
This can be thought of as an encyclopedia of pharmacoepidemiology. Everything anyone could want to know about the topic is included in this truly outstanding publication. It is a work of art, skillfully presenting 48 excellent chapters written by 104 different authors. This update follows the previous edition by almost a decade and incorporates some new, future-oriented chapters as well as updates with current literature.
Purpose
The book serves multiple purposes. It is a splendid textbook for pharmacoepidemiology university courses, and it also serves as a superb reference for anyone working in this field. Pharmacoepidemiology is a relatively new discipline and this book makes it possible for clinicians and researchers to learn without a teacher or class. There are several other books in this realm, but this is the five-star one. Every single author is an internationally recognized expert, and the writing and organization are logical and clear. This book meets the editors' objectives in being so useful, especially with its 10-page glossary and 22-page complete index.
Audience
The principal market for this book is courses in medical, pharmacy, and public health schools. It will appeal to both undergraduates and seasoned scholars in the discipline. The expectations of the editors are the same as mine: the book can be of assistance in designing studies, understanding publications, and solving methodological questions. The book should be a welcome addition to the literature at pharmaceutical companies and biotechnology companies as well..
Features
The 48 chapters are divided into six parts, or sections. They range from the macro-level (What is pharmacoepidemiology?) to the use of pharmacoepidemiology in different settings, to the wealth of methodological and quantitative chapters, ending with a speculative look into the future of the field. One most useful feature is a sample-size table, which makes this publication a one-stop source for design, statistical, and other analytical matters. It is absolutely complete in its 952 pages.
Assessment
This book is no surprise. The first four editions were excellent and this one continues that tradition of excellence. This is the only book on pharmacoepidemiology that anyone needs. Students in an elementary level course may not need this update, but it is far superior and much improved over the previous editions. Persons actively involved in the discipline should want to have this latest edition since it incorporates all of the latest research designs and thinking in the field.
