Description
This book provides basic descriptions of the lesions underlying neurological diseases by limiting the pathophysiological considerations to essential principles, assuming that readers are already familiar with neuroanatomy, neurohistology, and neuropathology concepts and principles. The previous edition was published a decade ago, in 2003.
Purpose
The purpose is to produce a concise and inexpensive manual that presents the basic aspects, concepts, and principles of neuropathology based on morphology, with good illustrations and short but accurate descriptions of the lesions underlying the diseases. These are indeed worthy objectives given the changes in specialty training in neurology, pathology, and neurosurgery due to the tremendous expansion of knowledge and the limited time dedicated to neuropathology during residency. Thus, a concise introductory manual in neuropathology is what most trainees need and this provides an updated synopsis of most neuropathology conditions.
Audience
The manual is designed to help physicians-in-training (residents, fellows, and medical students) in the fields of neurology, neurosurgery, and pathology understand and get familiar with basic concepts and principles of the highly specialized discipline of neuropathology. More than 30 world-renowned experts from the fields of neuropathology and neurology have contributed to the chapters in this book.
Features
This concise manual discusses briefly but clearly most neuropathology topics that trainees might encounter in routine practice. The book's organization makes it easy to follow. It begins with a review of the basic pathology of the central nervous system with separate chapters dedicated to tumors, trauma, infections, vascular diseases, inflammatory demyelinating diseases, degenerative diseases, congenital malformations, and so forth. Metabolic diseases are discussed in two separate chapters on acquired and hereditary conditions, which is helpful in distinguishing the concepts with clarity. Other chapters cover the pathology of skeletal muscle and peripheral nerves. The chapter on human prion diseases is especially noteworthy, discussing the biology of prions, idiopathic, familial, and acquired human prion diseases as well as prion protein gene polymorphisms. As a concise synopsis, the book omits a lot of detail, and the authors acknowledge this. Given this limitation, the book at times might feel too concise for practicing pathologists or pathologists in training. However, this can be an invaluable resource to physicians in training in neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, neuroradiology, or neuroendocrinology.
Assessment
Overall, with its comprehensive but authoritative description of most of the neuropathological conditions that physicians in training might encounter in routine practice, this book is an invaluable tool with numerous high quality pictures and clear, concise discussions. It is also inexpensive and compact compared to other neuropathology books and can be a useful tool in board preparation. This update was essential given the recent changes in the fields of neurology, pathology, and neurosurgery over the past decade.
