Description
This is an update of a book focusing on the psychiatric care of patients with medical, neurological, and surgical disorders. This edition provides updated coverage of drug treatments, practice guidelines, and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. It also addresses the use of herbal and nutritional therapies, self-rating scales and questionnaires, and technology (e.g. smartphone apps). This edition is accompanied by online content as well.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide a comprehensive reference for medical psychiatrists. It highlights the knowledge, clinical thought process, and decision-making that a medical psychiatrist would need to know to effectively treat patients with mental disorders and general medical conditions. It is well edited and has a consistent flow and format, which makes moving from one chapter to the next quite seamless.
Audience
While the authors do not explicitly state their target audience, this book is clearly targeted at medical psychiatrists. However, it is also suitable for any psychiatrist or provider taking care of mental health patients with medical comorbidities. The authors are leading national and international experts in their fields, and many have additional training beyond their psychiatric training in the fields of neurology, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, etc.
Features
This book covers everything. It begins by discussing diagnostic approaches to the patient with medical and psychiatric comorbidity. It highlights examination techniques, neuropsychological assessment tools, rating scales and screening tests, as well as the role of laboratory and neuroimaging evaluation. It does an exceptional job of reviewing the evidence behind various rating scales and screening tests, as well as reviewing important points about various laboratory tests. It then discusses various psychotherapeutic modalities, including hypnosis, mind-body medicine, and the role of technology. It comprehensively reviews pharmacological and other somatic treatment modalities. The discussion of psychopharmacology, relevant pharmacokinetics and drug interactions, and neurostimulation modalities is very comprehensive. It then discusses both psychiatric and medical diseases that a medical psychiatrist would encounter, with each chapter highlighting important concepts to consider when approaching a patient with psychiatric/medical comorbidity. Sections focus on specific populations: women's health, surgical specialties, and children/adolescents. The section on women's health is particularly comprehensive. Surprisingly, it does not cover the wealth of knowledge we have about the risks/benefits of psychiatric medications in the peripartum period.
Assessment
This is a must-have reference for all clinicians who work with patients with medical and psychiatric comorbidity, whether they are medical or psychosomatic psychiatrists, combined trained psychiatrists (internal medicine, family medicine, neurology, child/adolescent), or medical providers. The editors and chapter authors are leading experts in their fields, and many have training and expertise beyond their psychiatric specialties. This lends an invaluable perspective to this well-thought-out and comprehensive book.
