The book covers the entire extent of surgical procedures, providing the information in a short format with many tables. This approach allows for ready access to the information as well as easy recall. The entire spectrum of anesthesia is covered in this handbook; therefore, it is no surprise the book is now in its fifth edition as it has been used by many students of anesthesiology and will continue to benefit future generations of anesthesia providers. Purpose The purpose of this book is to serve as a quick reference guide to providing anesthesia for surgical procedures. The book incorporates new material including the health and well-being of anesthesia providers, patient safety, and perioperative medicine. In the preface, the editors acknowledge the goal of producing the most useful anesthetic handbook in the world. The editors may have achieved this goal as this book represents the most comprehensive handbook in anesthesiology. From important considerations in wellness and anesthetic impact on the environment to surgical procedures, the book should be the first book a student uses to understand the anesthesia for a specific surgical procedure. Despite the extent of the material, the book is small and easily transported. This handbook is the one that students in anesthesiology should have immediately available. Audience This book is clearly written for students learning anesthesiology. The material is presented in a format that enables students to easily recall when discussing the upcoming case with faculty. While the intended audience is students, providers will also find the book useful, especially if they need a quick review of a topic with which they are not familiar. It also is a valuable book for individuals who are preparing for examinations as the clinical format is comprehensive and easy to recall. The editors have done a terrific job in ensuring uniformity among the chapters in style and content, making the book easy to read. The liberal use of tables also makes the material easy to comprehend. The chapter authors are leaders in anesthesiology and the editors are true experts. Features The book starts with good practice and patient safety, reinforcing the importance of these topics. The discussion of wellness, including suicide, substance use disorder, and environmental impact, highlights the relevance of the book and that the editors are not afraid to discuss the problems of being involved in anesthesiology. The preoperative assessment of patients includes a section on optimization of the patient prior to surgery. There are no specific chapters on pharmacology, but it is discussed in the chapters for each surgical procedure. This presentation of pharmacology renders the material clinically relevant and useful. The liberal use of tables is greatly appreciated. The book is compact and, as such, is easily placed in a white coat or bag to make it readily available. Its only shortcoming is the lack of an accompanying electronic copy that could be placed on one's mobile device. Assessment This book is extremely useful to students in anesthesiology. It is also helpful to those who are already in practice when confronted with an unfamiliar situation. It is the best handbook available - even better than Handbook of Clinical Anesthesia, 7th Edition, Barash et al. (Wolters Kluwer, 2014). The fifth edition reflects current controversies in anesthesiology and provides updated clinical information.
