Description
Comprised of nine chapters, including an introduction and chapter dedicated to the core principles of public health, this book covers the four main elements of health protection. Numerous case studies included throughout the chapters, accompanied by figures and tables in grayscale, relate the information in the text to community and global health examples. A table of contents, two forewords, an acknowledgment, detailed biographies of each case contributor, and a brief biography on the author precede the first chapter. Each chapter ends with a conclusion followed by references used in the chapter. At the end of the book is a thorough index.
Purpose
Taking a multidisciplinary approach, this title provides an overview of the key components of health protection, includes relevant case studies, and concludes with a look at possible future practices and development in the field. As a tool for fieldworkers in public health, and as an introduction for beginners establishing a career in health protection, the book is a necessary guide. Information in the text, as well as tables and figures, are valuable for individuals in the field of health protection; however, the book does not fully meet the needs of professionals due to its continual misuse of grammar.
Audience
With a number of case studies, descriptive figures, and basic health definitions emboldened throughout the chapters, the book provides a fundamental understanding of health protection that is crucial for readers new to the field. Although it is also intended for graduate students and healthcare professionals, the simplicity of information is best utilized as a beginner book or reference guide for volunteers and fieldworkers. Based on her extensive research and study in the field of public health and health protection, the author, along with her diverse set of case contributors, delivers the information in the book credibly and with authority.
Features
The book covers the four key components of health protection - climate change adaptation and migration, emergency preparedness, communicable disease control, and environmental health - followed by challenges, opportunities, and health risks in the field. Incorporating a significant number of relevant case boxes throughout the chapters, the book clearly connects the four main components of health protection with public health examples from various countries and contexts. While the book does a noteworthy job of providing a thorough, global analysis of health protection, the unclear writing style is a major shortcoming.
Assessment
This book is unique in its inclusion of all four domains plus additional real-world examples of health protection. Many other books on health protection focus on one of the four domains expanded on in this book, while few texts focus on more than one domain. Information in this text, although important to the field and well supported by features in the book, is difficult to understand and engage with due to numerous grammatical errors and poor verb usage. The quality of the book is greatly diminished due to these editing oversights.
