Volume 1 is titled "The Scope of Public Health;" volume 2 is "The Methods of Public Health;" and volume 3 is "The Practice of Public Health." Purpose This book is a colossal undertaking on global health, which in itself is an immense field. The authors state their goal is to stimulate interest in health promotion and health equity for all. This global health "bible" discusses the present state of public health, along with the history, methods, and dire challenges facing the field. Its thoroughness and inclusiveness in representing all topics makes the book a rich resource. Audience The book is written for students and health professionals in the field of public health. The authors are global health experts from around the world. The book is an international concerted effort that offers a strong discourse on global health. Features The book has three volumes that each cover distinct areas. Volume 1, "The Scope of Public Health," delves into the discipline of public health, determinants of global health and disease, policy, law and a rich discussion on ethics. Volume 2, "The Methods of Public Health," contains sections on information systems, statistical approaches, social science techniques, and a section on environmental and health sciences. Volume 3, "The Practice of Public Health," thoroughly addresses the present-day challenges of "old" and "new" diseases, both chronic and acute. The book clearly explains disease burden and elaborates on public health hazards along with their prevention strategies. There are chapters on people with disabilities, Indigenous populations, refugees, incarcerated people, and the very up-to-date topic of sexual health and gender identity. The book also addresses violence, injury, and war, and focuses on women's issues, children, health equity, and marginal populations. The book's extensive glossary of abbreviations is helpful. The contributors have done a fine job of viewing the subject matter through the eyes of high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries. I found it very disturbing to read the societal influences at play that have caused public health to backslide. For example, life span in some countries is decreasing for the first time in recorded history. The contributors have also addressed how technology, social media, and conservative beliefs have had negative influences on global health and the unique hurdles they now present. No subject has been left untouched in this remarkable collection. Assessment This book stands on its own in the broadest sense. The global contributors and the all-inclusiveness of the subject matter makes this a perfect read for any public health student or global health professional. Those working in non-governmental organizations may find it very useful in understanding and coordinating with global health challenges and systems. This edition brings the newest information and demands into focus, making it very current.
