Description
This seventh edition psychiatry textbook updates the previous edition of six years ago, and includes updates from DSM-5 and ICD-10. It provides an overview of topics across psychiatry with numerous references to expand on each topic.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide an update on the field of psychiatry, including advances and changes in the field since the previous edition was published.
Audience
The target audience is medical students and primary care and community health professionals who are working as part of a multidisciplinary mental health team.
Features
This book covers all major aspects of psychiatry in its 26 chapters. It endeavors to cover a number of topics that are not always addressed in general psychiatry books, including behavioral complications of neurological and medical illness as well as complexities that are unique to subspecialty populations. Tables are used frequently to organize the information into clear, easily referenced material. The primary challenge of the book is that its size makes it difficult to cover all of the key points in appropriate detail. While there are frequent references to more detailed sources, there is a risk that students may overgeneralize some of the material without reviewing these references. However, the reference section is extensive and provides significant additional material for interested learners.
Assessment
Overall, this is a strong addition to the field and it provides a good overview of complex material in a format that is manageable for student learners.
