Description
This is the third edition of an introduction to pediatric dentistry. The previous edition was published in 2001.
Purpose
The purpose is to give practitioners didactic information about pediatric dentistry, and then supplement that information with clinical advice that should be useful for anyone who treats children. Considering the continuing shortage of pediatric dentists, this book is both useful and needed.
Audience
The book is written for undergraduate dental students, but should prove useful for residents in pediatric dental specialty programs and general practitioners as well. The authors (all professors in pediatric dentistry) are credible authorities.
Features
It provides diagnostic and treatment recommendations for all aspects of pediatric dentistry, including restorative dentistry, trauma, orthodontics, and management of the child with special needs. The author wisely separates operative treatment of dental caries in the primary and permanent dentition into two separate chapters. Discussion of behavior management, unfortunately, is limited to just a few pages.
Assessment
This is a thorough examination of pediatric dentistry and will prove useful for all students and practitioners who treat children. The many changes and additions from the second edition justify this book's publication.
